"I did not have lunch with that man" Or did I...?
Thanks again to Kate over at Small Dead Animals for this one. Original post here. Apologies to all for the poor English, the letters are written in French and I've gone and translated them. I've done the best I can, but I'm sure there's plenty of places where I've missed some slang term or another. The translations are all under the LJ cut.

5 January 1994, from Claude Boulay, President of Everest Group, to Paul Martin, Minister of Finance
Sir,

The Everest Group has just been selected to become a member of Affiliated Advertising Agencies International Inc (3AI), the largest group of independent advertising agencies in the world. The recent accession of the Everest Group within the 3AI makes it the only Québecois agency within an international organization of this scale since it was founded more than 50 years ago.

For a company like yours, this network supports a global solution of marketing and communication services on an international scale.

Thus, starting from Montreal, you can have all the expertise and the capacity of the member agencies throughout the world, since each one constitutes to some extent a branch for its partners. More precisely, 66 partners come from the United States of America, 15 from Europe, and 12 from Asia. Thus, you can easily have access to all of the markets which you intend to serve, and this, by the means of a single counter.

As of now, the Everest Group is able to assist you anywhere throughout the world. Please allow us the occasion to present to you more details of the 3AI, as well as the privileges which it can bring to you.

President,

18 February 1994, from Paul Martin, Minister of Finance, to Claude Boulay, President of Everest Group
Sir,

I would like to thank you for your letter from this past 5 January in which you make me aware of your organization.

I benefit from the occasion to offer my congratulations to you to have been selected to become member of Affiliated Advertising Agencies International, Inc (3AI). I am happy to see that Canadian companies are becoming increasingly recognized on the international market.

The services which you offer could interest the Federal Office of Regional Development of Quebec, of which I am the minister responsible. Your letter has been sent to my office in Montreal for informational purposes.

Please accept Sir, the expression of my sincerity.

3 March 1995, from Paul Martin, Minister of Finance, to Claude Boulay and Diane Deslauriers
Claude and Diane,

I would like to thank you for your kind words of encouragement at the time of the deposit of my budget, February 27, 1995. I am very touched that you took time to share your views with me.

This year's budget represents the sum of several months of public consultations. Thousands of Canadians, companies, organizations, and groups have made their suggestions known to us so that the government put its finances in order. We listened to what Canadians had to say to us; thus, the government can present a balanced and equitable economic diary.

Please accept, Claude and Diane, the expression of my sincerity.

26 April 2001, from Paul Martin, to Claude Boulay
Dear Claude,

It is with a great joy that I join my voice with all those which surround it this evening to celebrate your fiftieth birthday. One half-century! What a beautiful vintage that of 1942!

I regret not being able to be with Diane and you to take part in this happy and unique event. An engagement that I cannot move prevents me from being with you all.

However, I would like to thank Diane for her kind invitation; I was very touched by it. I continue to think that the years run on Diane with such an amount of grace and beauty which youth always lives with. Claude, you should follow her example!!

Claude, I would like to take this occasion to offer to you my best wishes of happiness and health...for the next fifty years! To the title of the oldest vintage (probably) of the assembly, I raise my glass to the reunions which are about to start: "Happy birthday, Claude, and of more beautiful years to come. All the best to you!"

Please accept, dear Claude, the expression of my sincerity.

PS: Claude, now you're 'too old' to play golf

Original PDF file (in French) here.

Update: The handwritten note at the bottom of the last letter reads "PS: Claude, now you're 'too old' to play golf". Thanks to [info]macbethann for that one. She has better eyesight than I do apparently ;-)

There you are folks...happy reading ^_^

Will it surprise anyone if the west separates.

One more straw in the bale that breaks the camels back.

Perhaps you could elaborate on your viewpoint. I don't see where you get the idea that the West is going to separate. If anything, wouldn't the West be happier for the chance to bring down the Liberal government, since they've been ignored for so long by the Liberals?
